  1. Airline fares from Pittsboro to Denniston are $120 for first class and $95 for coach class.  If a flight carried 122 passengers for a total fare of $11,890, how many first class passengers were on the flight?

 

  1. Bob has an equal number of nickels and quarters.  If he has $2.70 in all, how many of each coin does he have?

 

  1. Miss Kelly bought some ten cent and fifteen cent stamps.  She bought 11 stamps in all and paid $1.30 for them.  How many of each kind of stamp did she buy?

 

  1.  Tickets to a school dance cost $2 in advance and $3 at the door.  In all, 194 tickets were sold for a total of $430.  How many tickets were sold at the door?

  1. How many pounds of Darjeeling tea, worth $3.50 a pound must be added to 16 pounds of India Ceylon tea worth $2.75 a pound to form a mixture worth $3.00 a pound?

A rock singer owns stock in three recording companies.  She has 50 more shares in Consolidated Records than in Amalgamated Sound and half as many shares in Consolidated Records as in Tapes Limited.  Her cost per share was $85 for Consolidated, $72 for Amalgamated, and $48 for Tapes.  Her average cost was $62 per share.  How much of each stock does she own?

 

 

  1. George worked at the Wexford Glass works on Saturdays packing vases.  He received 10 cents for each piece he packed successfully and was fined $1 for each piece he broke.  If he handled 220 pieces and was paid $16.50, how many vases did he pack successfully?

 

11. The registration fee at an annual meeting of the Mathematical Association of America was $3 for members and $5 for non-menbers.  If registration receipts at the meeting  were $340 and 926 persons were in attendance, how many members were registered?
