SIMPLE READING PROBLEMS

1.   Three more than three times a certain number is 24.  Find the number.

   Number = x                                 3x +3 = 24                                                    7

                                                          3x = 21

                                                          x = 7

2.   Three times a certain number increase by 5 equals 11.  Find the number.

          Number = x                           3x +5 = 11                                                    11                   

                                                          3x = 6

                                                          x = 2

3.   Ten times a certain number increased by 2 is 32.  Find the number.

          Number = x                           10x + 2 = 32                                                3

                                                          10x = 30

                                                          x = 3

4.   One number exceeds another by 10.  Their SUM is 30.  Find the numbers.

          1st Number = x                    x+x+10 = 30                                               10, 20

          2nd Number = x+10           2x = 20

                                                          x = 10

5.   The sum of twice a number and the number is 36.  Find the answer.

          Number = x                           2x+x = 36                                                     12

                                                          3x = 36

                                                          x = 12

6.   If 10 is subtracted from one half of a number, the result is 30.  Find the number.

          Number = x                           1/2x-10 = 30                                     80

                                                          1/2x = 40

                                                          x = 80

7.   If 12 is added to one third of a certain number, the result is 36.  Find the number.

          Number = x                           1/3x+12 = 36                                               72

                                                          1/3x = 24

x = 72
